St. Mary - Virgin Mother of Our Lord

St. Mary is known to be the mediator for all grace and advocate for all the devotees before God. She is the "mother of our Lord" as she was welcomed in this address by Elizabeth the aged mother of St. John the Baptist (St. Luke 1:43)

In our common prayers the Lord's prayer beginning "Our Father which are in Heaven etc" is generally followed by a repetition of the message of angel Gabriel - St. Luke 1:28- Hail Mary etc and the words of praise of Elizabeth - St. Luke 1:42 - "Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your words." We finish it with an appeal for her mediation on our behalf forever before Almighty even at the moment of our death.

In the sacramental services and prayers of the church from the early periods, the mediation of St. Mary was an integral part. One of the three Altars of every Indian Orthodox Church is dedicated to St. Mary.

According to the teachings of the Church, God is pleased to respond to petitions offered to Him routed through the intercession of St. Mary the Virgin Mother. This was the constant teaching of the holy fathers since the beginning of the Christian church.

Let us go to our Mother. She would point to her son with the message "Do whatever He tells her so you". (St. John 2:5). She would intercede to her son and our Lord for fulfilling our shortages, well in advance, as it was done during the marriage feast at Cana of Galilee. Be the Mother's prayer a fort around us forever.

The feast of St. Mary (Dormition) is celebrated on August 15.

St. Thomas - Apostle of India

Thomas was one of the twelve disciples of Lord Jesus Christ. Thomas in Hebrew means "The Twin". So he was also known as "Didymus" which meant 'The Twin' in Greek. Thomas was the first disciple who confessed, Jesus as "My God and My Lord". Thomas is also known as "The Doubting Thomas", because he demanded an objective proof of evidence for resurrection.

The Indian Orthodox Church, otherwise known as The Malankara Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Churches in Christendom and the most ancient in India was established by St.Thomas in 52.A.D.

St. Thomas preached the gospel and established churches in different parts of Kerala in India and appointed prelates and priests. In due course, the Apostle returned to the Coromandal coast and continued his gospel work in Madras where he eventually attained martyrdom on December 21, 72 AD

December 21 the day St. Thomas attained martyrdom is celebrated as
St. Thomas Day.

St. George the Martyr

St. George was born about 280 A.D. of a Christian family that was wealthy and of noble origin, in the city of Cappadocia, a city of the Eastern Empire, in Asia Minor.

He followed the usual career of young nobleman and joined the Roman army, where his ability and charm brought him quick promotion. One story says that he was a Military Officer of Emperor Constantine, who later became Christian. The legend says that St. George came with Constantine to Britain and visited some holy places as Glastonbury and Caerleon. On his return to Nicomedia, the capital of the Eastern Empire where Diocletian settled, he met the fiery storm of persecution.

Diocletian gave orders for the issue of a formal edict against the Christians on February 23, in the year 303 A.D., being the feast of Termhlalia.

The Emperor tried to seduce St. George with promises that he would be granted a higher position in the Empire. But as these promises failed to attract him, the Emperor began to threaten with unbearable tortures that he will inflict on him. Lastly he put him in prison.

St. George is indeed a universal Saint whose feast is observed in the East and the West. The feast of St. George falls on 23rd April.

St Gregorious - First declared Saint of the Church

St. Gregorious, popularly known as "Parumala Thirumeni" was born in the priestly family of "Pallithatta Thanagattu" in Mulunthuruthy near Cochin on 15th June 1848. The disciplined life of Mar Gregorious enriched by prayer & fasting helped him to commune with God from his childhood days. He had a thorough knowledge in Theology and Syriac. St. Gregorious was a man of prayer and made it clear to the world that Prayer and devotion is mightier than any worldly possession. Parumala Thirumeni's short life was remarkable in many respects. A deacon at the age of 10, a priest at the age of 18, a bishop at the young age of 28, passed away on November 2nd 1902, after a saintly life of prayer to become the brightest jewel in the Indian Orthodox Church.

In his bishopric, St. Gregorious established monasteries, churches and was the motivator to establish schools in different parts of Kerala and associated with varied activities and development of the Indian Orthodox Church. He was admired for his organising ability and was very popular with the masses. St. Gregorious tried to preach the Holy Gospel of Our Lord to the backward communities and many were accepted into our fold.

At the age of 54, St. Gregorious became seriously sick and passed away on 2nd November 1902, and the body was entombed at Parumala Seminary, Kottayam.

In 1947, The Holy Episcopal Synod of the Indian Orthodox Church canonised and Gregorious as the first Saint of the Indian Orthodox Church. There are hundreds of instances that proved his Saintliness. Thousands of people receive favours and blessings through his intercession. The growing flow of pilgrims to his tomb, several years after his demise, tells a story of a man of faith, prayer, healing, and great intercession.

November 1 and 2 are the main feast days of St. Gregorious.

ST. ALBANS

St. Alban was a pagan inhabitant of Verulam in central England. In the mid of A.D.3, but others say the beginning of the A.D 4

He accepted and sheltered a Christian priest fleeing the Roman persecution. The priest was found out, but St. Alban arranged a swap of clothing allowing the priest to escape. Brought before the judge, St. Alban confessed Our Lord Jesus Christ and was condemned to be beheaded. On the way to execution, when the crowd that was following to see his death came to the river, he prayed and the waters parted so all could cross. His executioner, Heraclius, was converted and suffered with St. Alban. Just before his earthly end St. Alban prayed and a spring arose from the spot. Verulam is now called St. Alban's, the site of a magnificent Benedictine monastery in earlier times.

The feast of St. Alban's falls on 22nd June

Our Church in New Zealand celebrated the first Holy Eucharist at the Church of St.Alban in Balmoral. We also have a shrine at the St.Alban's dedicated to the memory of St. Mary, St.Thomas, St. Alban, St. George, St. Greogious of Parumala and St. Dionysius of Vattasseril.
